The Secret Formula For Fat Loss That No One Seems To Be Telling Women

Monday, April 28th, 2008

By Heather Picken There are so many diet programs, books, and sites that will list so many different diets. For example: The South Beach Diet, Atkins Diet, Juice Fasting and you even see celebrity’spitching their diets. Now some of these might have some good aspects to them in the waythey give you good food choices but there’s so much more to it then that. Any diet can make you lose weight but how many can promise you and show you how to keep it off? We live in a world where the weight loss industry over promises but under delivers.90-95% of women who go on diets fail. Don’t feel bad that you can’t just seem to stick to a program the real reason you’re not able to get the results you want and to keep them is thatwhat you have been given is the wrong technology. So what is the right technology for women to achieve the body and health they desire? Well in my 10 years of researching and helping women achieve exactly that and maintain it, I have realized that there is a formula for ultimate fat loss success that no one seems to be talking about or knows how to do correctly to produce long-lasting results and without this piece of information you will be on the continuing quest for the next best diet out there as every week another one seems to come our way. The secret is the right information, in the right order, and the application of it is crucial in getting and maintaining your fat-loss goals. Don’t make the mistake of buying a program or system that doesn’t include this. The number one ingredient in this fat-loss success formula is to understandhow your mind works in the fat-loss process. Did you know you are either programmed to lose fat or gain fat and if you know the exact formula for fat-loss success then you can undo years of failed attempts of dieting and gaining it back and never being satisfied in the way you look. Think about it everything we do in life is a mental process and our habits and beliefs are shaped97-98% through our subconscious minds and only 2-4% are through are conscious minds. The secret is working in changing your subconscious mind in order to get the unwanted fat off.Part of the formula goes far beyond just positive thinking and goals setting. You need to believethat you can achieve it and you also need to create more positive chemicals in your brain. Each time you think a negative thought you elicit negative chemical and the same goes for positive thoughts. The average person thinks anywhere from 40,000-50,000 a day so if you’re thinking negative thoughts all day about how you don’t like your body then that is exactly what you will attract. You can actually re-train your mind to be on ‘auto-pilot’ so that the majority of your thoughts are positive and when you master that your actions will match as this is only a small part in training your subconscious mind to get the body you desire and keep it that way. Imagine never going back to your old habits and old ways! Once I implemented this in a system the results were incredible, taking women from hating exercise to loving it. You don’t have to suffer anymore “if you get your mind right the body will follow”, that was said byan unknown Olympic coach that realized that if you want to perform your best you need to work onyour mental muscles. What Most Marketing Gurus Don’t Teach You

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By Debbie LaChusa If you’re not getting the results you want from your marketing, there’s a good chance it’s because you’re missing one key ingredient. An ingredient that can make the difference between successful marketing and dreadful marketing. The difference between your business making it or breaking it. You’re probably doing “tactical” marketing. So what exactly does that mean? Isn’t marketing, marketing? The answer is, no. There are two kinds of marketing: strategic marketing and tactical marketing. And, there is a distinct difference between the two. It’s what most marketing “gurus” don’t teach you As I look around, most of the “marketing gurus” I see are teaching tactical marketing. It’s not that that’s bad … it’s just that it’s only part of what you need to succeed. They’re teaching you how to write copy. How to publish an ezine. How to market your business by writing articles or by issuing press releases. How to market by teaching teleseminars or doing speaking engagements. Or even how to network effectively. Yes, these are all very valid ways to market your business. So, what’s the problem? Without a well-thought-out marketing strategy behind them, your chances of finding success with any or all of these marketing tactics is limited. So what exactly is strategic marketing? Just like it sounds, strategic marketing means you have a strategy behind your marketing. A “game plan” if you will. It’s what you do BEFORE you start marketing It involves spending some time BEFORE you market to determine exactly what you want to accomplish and setting some goals for your business. It means establishing an objective for every marketing activity you undertake. With strategic marketing you take the time to answer some basic questions about who you are marketing to and what message will be most effective. You take the time to really understand the people you are marketing to and how your product or service solves a problem or fills a need they have. You put all these puzzle pieces together to create a strategy and a plan to grow your business. Yes, that strategy may involve things like writing effective ad copy, publishing an ezine, article marketing, writing press releases, and maybe even doing some speaking or networking. But here’s the real difference … You now have a game plan driving your use of these marketing tactics. You know what you want to achieve. You know who you’re trying to reach. You know where you can find them. And you know what you must say to persuade them. And, most importantly, you have a marketing plan that ensures you’ll stick with your marketing consistently enough to actually move the needle toward your goals. Overfed Yet Undernourished

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

By Al Sears MD Americans jump from one diet trend to the next. But where has this obsession with healthy eating gotten us? Obesity continues to rise now affecting one in five Americans. And incredibly, over 60% of American adults are now overweight.1 Somehow, our diet obsession has turned us into the fattest people in history. Weve also seen an explosion of other diet-related problems. Here in my clinic, so many of my new patients just can’t figure out why theyre so tired. In todays Health Alert, well look at where weve gone wrong. Ill also give you a few tips for getting back to a more natural routine. Americans: Overfed but Undernourished Our tastes naturally guide us to food thats good for us. Unless our ancestors were starving, they didn’t eat grains because grains didn’t taste good. Without processing, grains are hard, gritty, tasteless and difficult to digest. A natural balance ensued. The grains escaped mammalian predation and we stuck to foods we are adapted to eat. In the recent low-carb trend, Americans got a little closer to the mark, but they still didn’t hit it. Not all carbohydrates are equal. Vegetables are a great source of carbs. They’re high in fiber, which slows the conversion of carbohydrates into glucose. That’s important because it also slows your body’s release of insulin. Fruits, nuts, and seeds are good as well. You can eat all these in their natural form and they are all good carbs. Grains, potatoes, and corn cant be eaten without processing or cooking and turn out to be problematic. They’re higher in starch and create huge amounts of blood sugar eventually leading to insulin overproduction, which only leads to weight gain. Lumping vegetables in with grains just because theyre both carbohydrates, ignores these critical differences and just doesn’t make nutritional sense. We also tend to focus on single foods, sometimes declaring them the path to true health. Take soy for example. Many will tell you that soy prevents heart disease and cancer, lowers cholesterol, and is an all around good thing to eat. But it just ain’t so Research links soy to decreased fertility, a higher risk of some cancers, and hormone imbalances. Still, the food industry grabbed hold of some promising study early on, some misleading tidbit of information, and created a booming market for soy. It’s now in 70% of processed foods.4 Revolutionize the Way You Think about Food Do you think more about what you like to eat or what you are supposed to avoid? One perspective leads to fulfillment and satisfaction. When you feel good about what youre eating, you naturally eat less. The other leads to guilt, regret and a propensity to eat more. First, think about whats good to eat: Eat more protein. Eggs from free-range chickens and grass-fed beef or bison are my favorites. Eat more vegetables and fruits. Eat more nuts and seeds. Enjoy a bit of chocolate now and again. A glass of wine most days won’t hurt either. Next, how to eat: Dont skip breakfast. Make dinner an event. Plan the meal. Invite the family. Set the mood. And enjoy each other’s company as much as you enjoy the meal. Chew. Slow down and savor the meal. Pause. Set your fork down between bites. Pay attention. When you feel comfortable and not hungry, decide to be done. Eating healthy is as simple as eating the foods you were built to eat. Having a healthy attitude toward food is as simple as enjoying the foods you eat, taking your time to taste them, and not worrying over the meal in front of you as you eat it. Marriage is Between a Man and a Woman

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By Lance Winslow Lets face it if you have been around homosexuals most all straight people have all been called homophobic, which is utter non-sense mostly, I just love women. I am not homophobic. I have had slander put on the Internet about my personal character, using fake screen names, when I found myself inadvertently debating with homosexuals over the gay marriage issue. All sorts of things and that completely pisses me off, although I realize it is a small minority that is using these tactics, Nevertheless, if the Gay and Lesbian Community really wants to get their way and sooner rather than later it does not make a lot of sense to attack in such ways. The Gay and Lesbian Community will lose allies and friends and reduce their synergy if this continues to be the norm. Additionally I am owed an apology personally by some of these radical gay fringe terrorists. Every time I see a flagrant gay male between the ages of 17-28 all I can think of is; that person fits the profile of someone who is angry and vindictive, a social time bomb if you will, who knows what they are capable of when no one is watching? Willing to use all possible means ethical or not to get their way. Willing to say anything, or harm anyone who does not agree, spread hate or even do an unlawful deed or outright criminal act. I have seen it, do denial will not work and I am sure the G&L Community is well aware of this problematic group within the group and probably wants to disown them. This is pure observation and I have witnessed this many times and I assume others who have watched such behavior feel the same. Consider this and observe the gay fringe next time you are out and tell me if I am not right on the money about this. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. Cuisine and Cooking

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

By David Russo The term “cuisine” has widespread implications, encompassing practices and traditions in cooking and the general preparation of food and beverages. These practices and traditions are usually specific to a certain geographic region and heavily influenced by the various ingredients available in that region as well as by it’s cultural mores (such as religion). The use of chopsticks in the Far East, for example, (itself done in keeping with Confucian teachings) necessitates that the food be cut into bite-size portions before serving. New technologies have also come into play in regional cuisine. New methods of production, preservation, transportation etc. coupled with the rise of intercultural interaction brought about by immigration and tourism has lifted many of the old restraints off of cuisine. “Ethnic” cuisine often depends upon the delivery of fresh ingredients from far-away lands and has only recently been made possible by faster and cheaper transportation as well as better preservation and other factors. The existence of foreign cuisines alongside local cuisines allows for the creation of new dishes through experimentation by chefs. Cuisine is, for all these reasons, culturally important in many ways and is often associated with oenology and gastronomy. Italian and French cuisine is much appreciated around the world for its variety and the quality of its products. Can Green Tea Help Treat Bacterial Infections?

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By Jon Stout It seems that we are only just beginning to discover the power of green tea. Over the last few years, green tea has been linked with reducing the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and rheumatoid arthritis. And, as time goes on, its likely that well find more and more uses for green tea. The magic bullet in green tea is its high level of anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants combat free radicals that are created in our bodies as we process food. The free radicals produced damage our cells and our DNA, and eventually lead to disease if we dont combat them. Anti-oxidants are our most important defense against the damage of free radicals. One of the most important anti-oxidants is epicatechin gallate (EGCG) As an anti-oxidant, EGCG is 25-100 times more potent than vitamins C and E. EGCG is one of the many catechins found in green tea, as well as in fruits and vegetables. They are anti-oxidants, bioflavonoids and polyphenols. All three of these substances are effective in improving our immune system, and preventing aging and disease. But, research is showing that, in addition to preventing disease, the powerful anti-oxidants in green tea may have an anti-bacterial effect, as well. This stands to reason, since we know that anti-oxidants boost our immune system. Researchers at Brigham & Womens Hospital in Boston found evidence that tea may keep the immune system prepared to fend off attacks from bacteria and other pathogens. The study looked at 11 healthy non-tea drinkers, who began drinking tea, and compared them with 10 healthy people who began drinking coffee. The researchers found that drinking 20 ounces of tea every day for at least two weeks doubled or tripled the immune systems output of an infection-fighting substance called interferon gamma. Apparently the body metabolizes the tea into molecules that mimic the surface proteins of the bacteria, jump-starting the immune system so that when real viruses show up, the bodys immune system begins acting more quickly. Okayama University in Japan found something even more interesting. Patients who were infected with a strain of Staphylococcus aureus (staph infection) that was particularly resistant to anti-biotics responded more favorably to their treatment when it was administered with the EGCG extract from green tea. The EGCG made the infection less able to fight against the anti-biotic. So, what does this mean to me? As with many other research findings, there are always more things that we need to examine. And, no doubt, more research will be conducted to more conclusively identify how green teas anti-oxidants can help our bodies stay healthy. It does seem likely, however, that the anti-oxidants contained in green tea are highly effective at improving your immune system, which may help prevent you from catching viruses. But, even more importantly, these anti-oxidants may help treat serious bacteria and infections even after youve contracted them. Doctors may be able to use this powerful information to help patients recover more easily and more quickly from serious infections. But, for sure, we know enough to conclude that we need to have a diet thats rich in anti-oxidants. Be sure that you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day. Then, wash it all down with green tea to help increase your anti-oxidant level even further. Be sure the tea you choose is green tea, too, rather than traditional black tea. Black tea is healthy, but not as healthy as green tea. All tea comes from the same plant, the Camellia sinensis; sister to the camellia bush that many people grow in the Southeast US. Black tea is fermented during processing, green tea is not. The fermenting that black tea undergoes changes the natural anti-oxidants into another state that is not as healthy as their original state. For this reason, green tea (and white tea, too) is your best source of anti-oxidants. How much do I need? In Asian cultures, where the consumption of green tea is very high and the incidence of many serious diseases is much lower than that of the US, many people drink as much as 8-10 cups of green tea each day. However, most doctors believe that you can gain health benefits from drinking just 8-10 ounces each day. One thing is for sure, any amount of green tea is increasing your level of anti-oxidants which is good for your health. They key seems to be drinking it consistently. Adding one cup of green tea to your diet every day for the rest of your life will be more effective than drinking a quart just occasionally. If youre not drinking green tea right now, adding it to your diet could be an effective way to improve your immune system over the short and long term. You may be able to more effectively fight off little viruses that come your way right now, and you may be able to prevent serious diseases later in life. Green tea is delicious and its good for you; so it makes good health sense to get your dose of green tea each and every day! Jon M. Stout is the Chairman of the Golden Moon Tea Company. Golden Moon Tea carefully selects the finest rare and orthodox teas, which are processed slowly and handcrafted with extreme care. Making Friends - First Impressions

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By Sharon Jacobsen If you’ve ever been for a job interview or even on a first date, you’ve no doubt heard plenty of advice about first impressions and how much they matter. What about when you’re meeting potential friends for the first time? Keeping in mind that just about anybody, from a new neighbour to the lady behind at the check-out in the supermarket can be a potential friend, first impressions are equally as important when you’re just out and about, going about your daily life. When we first meet a new person our sub-conscious mind automatically starts computing a variety of signals from which we draw our conclusions. No doubt you’ve met people and immediately felt uncomfortable with them. But, if asked, you wouldn’t be able to say why you didn’t like that particular person there’s just something you can’t quite put your finger on. The same goes with those we immediately feel comfortable with. Our minds are simply sending us the answer to a complicated equation; an answer we don’t always fully understand. It’s important to remember that we’ve only between seven and seventeen seconds of interaction before the other person will form an opinion. Although later deeds may help them re-evaluate their stance, nothing will entirely eradicate the first feelings they had about you. When it comes to first impressions, second chances simply don’t exist. So how do we make a good first impression? The first rule, and this really is a golden rule, is to immediately give the ’spotlight’ to the other person. Everybody likes to feel that they’re the centre of attention and when making a good first impression, giving them the starring role is paramount to success. Just think of the times you’ve met somebody who talked about herself non-stop. How did you feel? Did you want to spend more time with her or did you avoid her like the plague? My guess is the latter. Whether or not the other person will make equally as a good a first impression on you will also depend on how they react to your giving them this central role. If they take it and keep running, they’ll no doubt become boring the ‘conversation baton’ should be handed back and forth, giving each part an equal opportunity to speak about themselves. Listen to what she says. It’s no use giving the other person the spotlight if you’re not going to listen to what she’s saying. Don’t interrupt but do make the right sounds and motions to show that you’re interested in what she’s saying. Short sentences like: “so what happened next?” or “and did you enjoy it?” are acceptable to lead the conversation forward but whatever you do, don’t say “funnily enough, I had a similar situation where…” and take the baton away from her by launching into your own story. By all means let her know you understand her through your own similar experience as this will give her a good opportunity to hand the central role back to you but let her choose the moment for the handover. To be a good listener it’s also important to maintain eye contact. Nobody enjoys talking to somebody who’s constantly looking around them as though waiting for somebody more interesting to come along. Give her your full attention. Avoid ‘foot in mouth’ syndrome. Humour is fine if you know how to use it but when making first impressions it’s probably best avoided unless you’re absolutely certain you won’t stray into personal territory. Obviously, the odd quip is acceptable but making ‘funny’ remarks about specific social groups and situations to somebody you don’t know may well prove to be hurtful. Regardless of how innocent the joke was, if you hurt the other person’s sensitivities you might just as well walk right away as any future relationship will be either out of the question or very strained indeed. Don’t correct the other person. Nobody wants to be friends with an argumentative person, do they? With that in mind, make sure the other person doesn’t wrongly judge you by biting your tongue even if somebody says something that’s totally against your own beliefs or that you know to be wrong. Some people find confrontations difficult to handle regardless of how long they’ve known a person - for those who’ve just met another person, it can and probably will be damning to any potential relationship that may have developed. Make yourself understood. Shy people have a tendency to mumble when they speak, as though what they have to say is unimportant and doesn’t need to be heard. If you’re talking to another person, for whatever reason, then obviously you have something to say that should be heard, even if it’s just “what’s the price of a loaf of bread?” or “I’m sorry, I’m late and must dash.” You won’t make a good first impression if the other person can’t understand you. Remember those seven to seventeen seconds? How many of them do you think you’ll have used just by having to repeat what you said? Mumbling is simply a waste of precious first impression time. Others will also form opinions of you based on the way you speak. Within those first crucial seconds they will have judged your level of intelligence, your cultural background, your level of education and more. Just think how you differently you’d judge a person who said “What? I didn’t hear you” to a person who said “I’m sorry, I didn’t quite catch what you said.” Which of the two you’d feel most comfortable with is irrelevant, the example is simply to identify the way we make our judgements. Using the above rules should help you feel more confident in social situations where you interact with new people. By developing these skills you’ll soon find that making friends will become easier and that you’ll at least be on “passing the time of day” terms with far more people than you ever were before. Employment and Career Opportunities in Automotive Sector

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Lance Winslow There is a huge shortage of automotive technicians in the automotive sector presently and it is growing. By 2007 it is expected to be 188,000 people short. Even with all the layoffs at General Motors, Delphi and Ford Motor Co. there is no way to fill the gap fast enough to fix the shortage. Meanwhile many of the technicians in the auto sector are being required to upgrade their certifications for working on OEM equipment. With a shortage of mechanics in the auto sector and an increase in the number of turcks, cars and boats being sold in the United States of America this poses a real dilemma. The auto sector is not the only place where there’s a shortage of jobs right now, also the trucking industry and in the aviation industry we have a shortage of air traffic controllers. It appears that the transportation sector has jobs for anybody who wants to work. However with unemployment numbers at 4.9 percent you can understand the problem. Many new car dealerships cannot get enough auto technicians in order to service the requirements for the manufacture guarantees on their vehicles. If we do not get more people learning the automotive trade we will be in dire straits and no ones car will run correctly. If you’re looking for a job well then, the auto sector is waiting for you. Achieve Recognition and Attract Career Advancement Opportunities By Being A Change Agent

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By Tayo Solagbade Becoming A Change Agent At Work - Key Actions You Can Take 1. Make sure you have at least as many years of experience, as the number of years you have been with your company, or on your job. Remember that your having spent 20 years in a place will not really mean you have acquired 20 years experience - unless you choose to actively seek out, analyse and ultimately learn from your experiences all through that period of time. In items a. and b. below, I elaborate. a. Constantly strive to discover better ways to do what you do. Never get passive -or think youve done all there is to be done! b. Oh, and by the way, dont wait for “others” to initiate the changes either. Sometimes those up there(or others) may not have the kind of insight you do into a particular issue. If you dont assert yourself and show them what YOU believe needs to be done, you will be denying both them and yourself the opportunity for significant progress or improvement. 2. Develop and diligently implement SPECIFIC PLANS to make your performance and learning each year different from - and an improvement on - last year. NEVER allow yourself to have a REPEAT performance of the last year. In other words, make sure you are continuously improving in your knowledge, skills and general abilities as it relates to doing your job. Then use your improved competencies to develop new and/or better ways of doing what you do. Do this diligently, and you will ultimately begin to achieve recognition and career progress on a consistent basis(that is of course assuming your employer thinks like the ones described in the quote below!). All successful employers are stalking people who will do the unusual, people who think, people who attract attention by performing more than is expected of them.” — Charles M. Schwab 3. Rock the boat - IF you have to! Sometimes you may (have to) upset some people, bruise a few egos, or even step on some toes to successfully influence positive change. If you learn to introduce your changes with tact, the damage done should not be irreparable. Dale Carnegies inexpensive book How to win friends and influence people offers timeless wisdom(you may NOT get in an expensive Interpersonal Effectiveness management course) on how to do this. I was listening to Sports Radio 88.9 Brila FM sometime ago, and a lady presenter credited the following quote to Bill Gates: I dont know the keys to success. But I know that the key to failure is to try and please everybody - Bill Gates Then there is Robert Schuller’s assertion that : “If you want to be a pacesetting thinker, you can expect problems with those who are trapped by tradition”- Robert Schuller As a green-horned brewer in Guinness between 1996/97, my keen interest in computers initially attracted plenty of criticism from some of my peers and senior colleagues. Some pointedly told me my efforts to use automated spreadsheet applications to replace manual reporting systems being used could not work. They also readily attributed any mistakes I made on the job to the time I spent working on the computer (something not at that time in widespread use) which in their opinion prevented me from mastering the essential practical requirements to successfully function as a brewer. In time, I was of course able to demonstrate beyond any shred of doubt that their assumptions were wrong. Not only did I mature into a competent brewer/shift manager (one who got repeated secondments to other departments to fill sudden vacancies while replacements were sought), but I also went on to use my computer skills to develop over five customised spreadsheet applications. These applications were formally adopted in place of the manual reporting systems being used at that time in the various departments I worked. In the rest of this article, I narrate some of my experiences a Change Agent in Guinness Nigeria Plc - in the hope that you will pick up some useful learning towards achieving achieving similar - if not better - successes in your workplace. “Some people join the crowd in order to become hidden” or protected from criticism or scrutiny. Since they also take care never to voice contrary (and at times ANY) opinion, they are rewarded with the anonymity they seek and the insignificance that results from it.” Tayo Solagbade Initiating Change As A Shift Brewer/Manager(My Story) I joined Guinness Nigeria as a Graduate Trainee in October 1994, and voluntarily resigned my appointment as Technical Training and Development Manager in December 2001 - having given 2 months mandatory notice. Click the following link to read a Yahoo! Newsgroup announcement of some management changes in Guinness in 2000, including mine. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Naija-news/message/1290.(See entries under the heading titled “Restructuring, appointments, promotions at Guinness” towards the bottom of the page) On numerous occasions while I worked in that company, I chose to assert myself and dare to be different by expressing my ideas, and challenging existing ways of doing things. (Since becoming an entrepreneur, I have been “guilty” of acting the same way. Read my article titled How To Be A Jack Of Many Trades - And Why It Can Make You Succeed More Often? to learn about how I am playing the change agent role outside paid employment). Between 1997 and 2000 I automated - in my spare time - the entire process of brewing data recording, analysis and report generation by developing custom automated spreadsheet applications using my self-taught skills in Lotus macros spreadsheet programming. Incidentally, I had learnt about Lotus macros programming by working closely with a young expatriate Training Coordinator - Richard Chambers - (who was extremely good at it) in my days as a Management Trainee in 1994/95. So you see, it had cost me NO money and just some time/effort to acquire a skill, which was to later open numerous doors of opportunities for me! I also had some ideas about how to improve the tools being used to measure the performance of the brewing process. And I felt so convinced about them that I just could not stop calling the attention of my superiors. Some examples follow. A Barrage Of Proposals In January 1998, I wrote the first of a series of three papers that would generate considerable debate in my department, to my boss. In it I faulted what was then our current method of calculating the Brewhouse Turn Round Time(BHTRT) parameter being used to asses our brewhouse performance, and proposed a modification to the formula. My colleagues some of whom had been brewers many years before I joined the company tested the modified formula and ultimately recommended its adoption. Two months later, the second paper questioned the reliability of the BHTRT parameter itself as a measure of performance. My argument was that BHTRT by its computation failed to capture other essential aspects of our brewing performance thereby sometimes understating out performance even when we had done well. As could be expected, not everyone readily accepted this line of reasoning. However, it did stimulate lively discussions and plenty of re-thinking. In June 1998, the third paper proposed (to senior management) for adoption, a formula for computing a new brewery performance measure which I called Brewhouse % Efficiency” to complement existing performance measures like the BHTRT. This formula had components which took account of all key variables in the brewing process thereby giving - what I considered - a more reliable representation of the overall performance of the brewhouse. Not only did my boss Greg Udeh buy into the idea, he engaged me in extensive discussions about how I derived it, and then sent it to the brewerys Operations Manager(OM) Alistair Reid. Few weeks later, following the approval from the OM, I made abridged copies of the original proposal, which my boss then circulated to senior managers in the technical function across the company. The response was instantaneous. For 6 consecutive months subsequently, the formula was discussed at the monthly Technical Review Meetings by senior managers in the Technical function. In addition, the Production department in Lagos brewery also “tested” the formula for use. I still recall vividly the many phone calls and emails(hard copies of which are in my files even now) that I exchanged with Chizzy Uduanochie who was then based in Lagos brewery, trying to explain how he could adapt the formula for use in their Lager brewing process. Best of all, I got a formal acknowledgment for my efforts when Brian Carson(who was then) - head of the Technical Function - commended me during one of the brewery management meetings I attended. Another Senior Manager - Raymond Ugboh - commented not long after, that the work I had done in developing that formula was like something for a PhD thesis! (What better way to discover how much of a positive impression you’ve made in peoples minds!) Little wonder then that I subsequently got repeated exposure to significant career advancement opportunities (especially as I never stopped doing those things for which I had been acknowledged - being innovative, creative, dedicated, dependable, a team worker etc). Career Opportunities: Acting As Training Manager Twice In The Same Year At different times in 1998 (when I made my many proposals), various opportunities would come my way. First Secondment: In March 1998, I was nominated to relieve the substantive Technical Training and Development Manger(TTDM) - Austin Isikhuemen - while he observed his annual leave(The TTDM’s position was on a management grade one step above middle level management which I belonged to as a brewer). The job involved supervising a team of 3 managers(Training Instructors), 5 Engineering Trainees and a Secretary, while reporting to the Brewery Technical Manager. Only 3 years earlier, the instructors had put me through as a 24 year old trainee. I realised this and made sure to let them see that I still valued and respected their experience. However, when necessary, I did not hesitate to assert myself especially when a possibility of set targets or deadlines not being met became apparent. I also had to ensure planned training courses were run on schedule for all employees. In certain cases this required liasing with external training consultants. Effective interfacing with sectional and departmental heads within the brewery or from other breweries, as well as periodic evaluation of training courses - especially those run by external facilitators were crucial roles I had to play. As usual, I looked for ways to make my job easier. For example, I introduced a spreadsheet macro program on the brewery’s intranet which enabled printing of blank Internal Technical Audit record forms. This reduced delays previously encountered by intending auditors whenever provided blank copies ran out. Repeat Secondment: Mid-August 1998, I received official notification of my nomination by the brewery’s Technical Manager, Chris Biss, to act, again, as TTDM. This time, it was for an even longer period of over 3 months! The incumbent TTDM - Austin - had commenced a 3 month overseas training tour before this time, and the Technical Manager himself was scheduled to go away for over one month on his annual leave during the period I was to act! I must add here that before then, one question that had tugged at my mind since completing my first secondment/acting assignment had been whether or not my performance had been to the satisfaction of the Technical Manager, and the brewery management in general. This subsequent recall to the position , and the circumstances under which I was asked to assume duties - where by no “hand-holding” was employed to “ease me in” (suggestive of the “Trial By Fire” method sometimes deliberately used by management to “test” the mettle of individual employees) - gave me the answer I needed. On this second run, I went on to formally propose data entry of training records for individual employees into the existing human resources database package(PS 2000) then being exclusively used by the HR department. Following discussions with the brewery IT department and the HR manager, the proposal was accepted and implemented. The Lagos brewery would later be advised to adopt the same solution following a Technical Review Meeting(TRM - brewery level meeting attended by senior mangers from the company’s Lagos Headquarters) at which I announced that records of over 350 (out of 430) staff in Benin Brewery had already been entered into the database. This made it possible to generate reports about individual staff containing details of employment history, courses attended, performance etc for use in decision making by departmental heads. Important Note: You might want to take note of the point made here. I got nominated - TWICE in the same year - to hold a high-profile position while less than 4 years old in the company. This trend actually continued right into the last years I spent in the company as I continued to use my self-taught skills to deliver EXTRA value every time I was at work. Other Examples From The Time I Spent In Guinness I make these additions NOT to blow my horn or make myself look good, but to provide the reader a variety of scenarios in which opportunities for influencing positive changes in the work place can be found and utilised. Incidentally, most times, if you are alert, they simply become obvious to you. The only thing left would then be to take action. The examples described here provide further evidence that I actively challenged existing ways of thinking and doing things with a view to discovering easier and better methods. They also show a trend that suggested I had an uncanny instinct that guided me to think along the lines that my superiors were likely to develop interest in later on. I strongly believe anyone can develop this instinct by adopting a similar mental attitude to the one described towards the end of this article. 1. Introducing A Process Control Tool : In June 1997, about four(4) months after returning from temporary redeployment to the Packaging department*, I proposed and implemented the use of CUSUM(Cumulative Sum Deviation) charts to monitor trends of some key brewing parameters to complement conventional Schewart charts then being used in the brewing department. *(I was officially a brewer, but had received training to work in the Packaging department, resulting in my periodic secondments to that department). I had come across the CUSUM concept while studying a paper on energy usage and monitoring. It offers among others, the benefit of indicating points at which changes occur in a process due to non-accidental causes thereby making it easy to evaluate the effect of modifications deliberately or inadvertently effected in the brewing process. To make it easy for the charts to be updated, I designed a spreadsheet for the purpose and championed its use. CUSUM charts were subsequently used to monitor and depict sustained progress in controlling beer foam retention and percentage brewing wort boil off rates. Read my article titled Simple Performance Measurement/Control Techniques to learn more about the CUSUM concept. In November 1997, I wrote and presented a paper titled “Statistical Process Control(SPC) And Target Setting” based on the work I had done in Guinness, at the 1997 edition of the Nigerian Institute of Management(NIM) Young Manager’s Competition. I was runner up in the zonal finals of the competition held at Ibadan, and placed 5th overall(out of 8 finalists) at the subsequent National Finals held in Lagos - in December 1997 - mainly due to a botched presentation caused by my inexperience. You can read the very useful learning I gained from that experience in my article titled I Flopped Badly At The National Finals!(A True Story About How NOT To Prepare For/Deliver An Important Presentation). Coincidence? In July 1998(about 6 months after I delivered my paper on Statistical Process Control at the NIM competition), Guinness Nigeria sent brewers and bottling line managers - myself included - to attend a Continuous Process Improvement course at the Lagos Business School. The potential applications of SPC to achieve process consistency featured prominently in the course. 2. Proposing A New Process Performance Measure : Earlier on in this article, I described the events leading up to my proposal in July 1998, of a new measure called Percentage Brewhouse Efficiency. I had derived the formula for computing this parameter by conducting elaborate spreadsheet based data analysis(based on an adaptation of the Packaging Line Efficiency formula) over a 2 month period - in my spare time - using more than 2 years worth of brewing data. The proposal was given consideration at the highest levels in the company’s technical function. Coincidence? In March 1999, a comprehensive list of performance measures (some new) to be used for comparative assessments of brewing sites across the Guinness Africa group were circulated from the London office. One of them - though not based on my formula - was a new parameter called Brewhouse Factory Efficiency. 3. Developing Best Operating Practice(BOP) Assessment Formats : Between February and March 1999, I lead-facilitated the implementation of the BOP assessment exercise for Velo filter operations in the brewing department. The assessment format I designed specifically for this exercise( based on the competencies indicated as requisite in the Operator Works Instructions) would later be requested from me by the Training Instructor responsible for BOP Operations - Ben Ogansuyi - and formally adopted for use. The Mental Attitude That Helped Me Succeed As A Change Agent In order to help you identify other factors that enabled me achieve recognition and career progress, I offer details about the kind of thinking I employed in doing my work. I had an unwavering interest in continually acquiring new knowledge, skills and experiences even if considerable personal expenses would be incurred. For instance, I recall having to spend almost my entire leave allowance on materials, and in preparation for the Nigerian Institute of Management’s(NIM) Young Manager’s Competition I entered for in 1997. The same thing happened when I chose to learn how to speak, read and write the French language two years later. Adopting a similar mental attitude is likely to boost your chances of work place success significantly. This positive attitude and work ethic made me get noticed easily, as I was often thrust into the spotlight for having introduced new ideas/ways of doing things - often times using my ability to influence people’s ways of thinking and doing things to get the buy-in of others. The many instances during which I was able to identify defects in existing settings and successfully propose acceptable modifications to them within a short period of joining a new or different work area are cases in point. The following narrative describes one of such cases. Staying Relevant To The Company’s Needs As A Change Agent After the company’s switch from Lotus Smart Suite to MS office platform during the roll over to year 2000, I made out time to develop self-taught proficiency in the use of Microsoft’s equivalent to Lotus 1-2-3’s macros i.e. MS Excel Visual Basic. I did this out of a well formed habit of doing whatever was necessary to keep myself relevant to the needs of the company. This pro-active step paid off in late 2001, few months before I left the company, when I successfully developed a Visual Basic for Excel Custom Automated Training Records database application for Benin brewery(which would later be sent to Lagos brewery at the request of the latters TTDM) in order to meet requirements of the then impending ISO 9002 certification audits, pending delivery of the application to be sourced by the IT department. You can work towards having the same experience too - since you will one day have to retire. Summary You must be constantly critical of yourself, and the environment in which you find yourself at any point in time. Always ask yourself questions when things happen differently or you notice something unusual. Many times, it is by keeping yourself in such a state of mental alertness that you are able to pick up valuable learnings from your experiences - and sometimes come up with innovative solutions to problems faced by you and others you work with! Also, while learning from experiences, you need to be patient since sometimes the experiences can be slow and even painful. You must fix your mind on the ultimate purpose of your having the experience(s), and draw strength from the knowledge that you will come away much better off than if you never had the experience(s). Finally, I ask you: What are the conditions or circumstances you accept to live and work with daily? Are there some that you dislike but feel you cannot do anything about? If yes, you must change your attitude and begin to think of HOW to turn those circumstances around to your advantage. If you give enough thought to it, you will find a way. So, dont rationalise your circumstances away - analyse them! ————— Self-Development/Performance Enhancement Specialist Tayo Solagbade - devotes his time to exploring new frontiers of Self-Development Education, especially as it relates to showing people what they can do by themselves, for themselves to achieve their set goals - DESPITE the limitations of their circumstances or environment.
