The Story of Joshua and Caleb

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Mike Bradley The story of Joshua and Caleb is one of the most powerful and dramatic stories in the entire Bible. There are major lessons in this story for all Christians to grab hold of! Most Christians have heard of the story of Moses, but many Christians are not aware of the story involving these two. They are an extension off the story of Moses. They are the climax to the story of Moses, as I will show you below. Ill first give you a brief synopsis of their story and then give you what needs to be learned from their story and how it personally applies to the situation that you are now facing. Brief Synopsis Of Joshua and Caleb God sends Moses into the land of Egypt to rescue and pull His people out of slavery from the Egyptians. He parts the Red Sea so they have a way to escape from the Egyptians. He throws 10 whopper plaques at the Pharaoh in order to get him to release His people from their bondage. God the Father performs one of the most powerful supernatural displays of signs and wonders that the world has ever seen to get His people pulled out of Egypt. Moses tells Gods people that He will give them what He calls the “Promised Land.” It is a land flowing with milk and honey. He will settle His people down in this land and this is where He will break the Israelites off into 12 different tribes. However, there is one little catch to this story. Before they are allowed to enter into this Promised Land, they must first pass a test. God allows them to stay in the “wilderness” for 40 years. He gives them all the basics as far as food and water in order to survive in the wilderness for the 40 years. God purposely tested His people to see if they would “hold fast” to Him while in the wilderness for the 40 years. And time after time, they continued to screw up. At one time, God got so mad at their rebellious attitude, they He literally wanted to kill them. But Moses got into the gap for his people, pleaded his case to God as to why He should not kill His people, and the Bible said God relented and changed His mind - just because Moses stood in the gap and effectively pleaded his case before God. However, just after a little over 2 years into this 40 year journey is where they finally blew it big time for the last time with God the Father. The Israelites sent in some spies into the Promised Land to check out who the enemy was and to develop battle strategies to defeat the enemies. God was going to allow them to go into the Promised Land, but they first had to defeat and drive out the enemies in order to conquer and possess the land. When the spies came back, they came back with a “bad report.” They said the enemies were “giants” and their kingdoms were too well fortified and they wouldnt be able to defeat them. Now mind you, God had just got done pulling them out of Egypt with one of the greatest displays of His supernatural power the world has ever seen with Him throwing 10 whopper plaques against the Egyptians and then parting the Red Sea to give them safe passage into the wilderness. When God saw their negative attitudes and their lack of faith and belief in His power, He literally threw up His hands and basically said thats it, youre done. At that point, He told them that all the men 20 years and older would not enter into the Promised Land due to their lack of faith and belief in Him. He said that they would all wander in the desert for the next 40 years until they all literally died out in the desert. God says that their carcasses would fall in this wilderness and that their sons would be shepherds bearing the brunt of their infidelity towards God. The spies that went into to spy out the land did so for 40 days. As a result of this bad report - God pronounces judgment that they should wander in the wilderness for 40 years to match up with the 40 days that they had spied out the land for. Now this is where Joshua and Caleb come in. God then tells Joshua and Caleb that they and the younger generation under 20 years of age would be the ones to go into the Promised Land because they had “wholeheartedly followed God.” They had full faith and belief in God that He could defeat all their enemies once they went into the Promised Land to conquer and possess it. Joshua was the leader that led them in. Moses himself was not allowed to go in and he died and was buried out in the wilderness. Joshua then took Moses position as leader of the Israelites. He then goes into the Promised Land with his strong faith in God and then proceeds to literally wipe their enemies off the face of the earth and conquer and possess the land that God had promised their forefathers. Lessons To be Learned From Joshua and Caleb 1.  I believe the “Promised Land” for todays Christian refers to Gods call on that persons life. For the Christian that will fully surrender his entire life over to God the Father - I believe God will place a specific call or calls on that persons life. However, it may take many years before God releases that person into what his true calling is for God. Sometimes it takes years of preparation to get ready for that call. But once that call comes in and you are getting ready to cross over into your “Promised Land,” a lot of Christians get cold feet at the last minute and walk out of their call. They start to get too focused on all the negative possibilities that they will encounter if they take the call. Fear sets in and they “bail out of the boat.” This is why the above story is so powerful. The Israelites lost their one and only chance to go into this Promised Land due to one main reason - fear and a lack of true faith and belief in the power of God too see them through. They were too scared of the “giants” they saw in the land that they were supposed to possess and they did not have enough faith in God to conquer and defeat these giants. As a result, they lost out on the biggest blessing of their entire life. After Joshua fully succeeded in his mission, he makes the comment shortly before he dies, that God had not failed him in any of the promises that He made to him in that He would give him every ounce of land that he would step foot on. He told Joshua that his enemies would be taken out and that he would be given total victory as long as he stayed with Gods instructions. Joshua saw his call completely through and when he died, he died a man with his call and mission from God completely fulfilled. His story is how God wants all of His people to live!! The 2 keys to Joshuas success was his strong faith in God and the fact that he had always “wholeheartedly followed God.” I always tell everyone to stay with their leadings from the Holy Spirit. The Bible says that the Holy Spirit will “guide us into all truth and teach us all things.” He is our guide and our teacher. If God puts a call on your life, but you dont follow His specific instructions and leadings on how to get there, you will never succeed. Joshuas story is one of the most dramatic stories in the Bible about someone who “did it right in God.” His story is a perfect example for all Christians on how to properly follow God and the call that He can place on your life. 2.  Susie, this story really applies to where you are at right now with God. You may be getting ready to have your door opened up to enter into your Promised Land - into Gods true call on your life. However, you are well aware of the “giants” and “strongholds” you will be coming against if this door opens up for you. Susie, remember the above story on Joshua. He saw the same “giants” and “strongholds” you are seeing. He saw all this before going in. God allowed him to see exactly what he was going into before he actually went into it. And God is showing you the same thing. You have two choices. You can either let fear and panic set in just like the Israelites did and lose your chance to enter into your “Promised Land,” or you can have the same strong faith and belief in God that Joshua had - and go in their with a “kick butt attitude” that you will be victorious and that you will accomplish everything that God wants you to accomplish. Ill leave you with one last thought. Joshua took his strong faith and belief in God, entered the Promised Land and achieved total victory in God. The Bible says God is “no respecter of persons.” What He will do for one, He will do for another. If God is calling you to go through this door, rest assured that you will have the full power of God operating through you to achieve total victory just like Joshua did! As a final testament to the this mans story, God saw fit to name one of the books of the Bible after him - “The Book of Joshua.” I think that was a very fitting ending to what this man accomplished “in God” while down here on earth. The Bible said Joshua lived to be 110 years old. Article written by Michael Bradley of Bible Knowledge Ministries. Their website currently has over 100 Bible articles. Are You Targeting the Right Prospects with Your Small Business Marketing?

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Charlie Cook Steve called from Minneapolis to ask how to attract new clients for his auto repair shop. He has been in business for two years and has four trained technicians to keep busy, but he was having difficulty attracting enough new customers. Steve wasn’t just waiting for people to show up at his shop. He regularly mailed letters to new homeowners in the area. His rationale was that people who had just moved into town would be looking for a mechanic before long. Steve wanted to know why what seemed like a good strategy wasnt working. Why was he only getting one or two inquires from each mailing to 500 prospects? He asked me if he was targeting the right people. “Anyone with a car is in my target market, right?” Good question. In theory, yes, any car owner living in the area is a potential client. But in reality, car owners have very different attitudes towards car maintenance. Steve was making the same mistake that most small business owners make in thinking about their target market. He was trying to market to everyone who might use his service instead of targeting the most likely prospects. After trying this for a year, he recognized that this marketing strategy was costly and inefficient. According to Albert Einstein, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Are you getting the number of inquiries and sales you want from your target market? If you’re not getting results then why keep marketing the same way over and over again? The alternative to broad based, costly marketing is to target your prospects more precisely and shape your marketing accordingly. There are three types of people in your target market. First, there are people with immediate problems. These prospects have urgent concerns and want solutions today. In Steve’s case, these are the customers who come in with a flat tire or a blown head gasket. Second, there are people who have a problem or want to improve their situation and are considering a purchase. They need more information in order to understand why they should use your product or service. They may take more time to reach a decision to buy. Again in Steve’s case, these are people who need their disc brake pads replaced before they fail and cause more costly damage, or who could be getting better mileage with a properly tuned engine, or who should purchase new tires soon to avoid a potential accident. These are the people who need to be educated in order to make a decision. Finally, there are people like my dear Dad in every target market. It was a point of pride with Dad to see how little he could spend to maintain his cars. He never took a car to a mechanic unless the broken part could no longer be wired back together or the car just wouldn’t start. People like Dad have blind spots in certain areas. The same is true in any business. Some people won’t spend money to fix or repair something even if it’s barely functioning. No matter what you say or do they dont want to be bothered. Their objective is to spend as little money as possible regardless of whether it costs them more in the long run or not. Know anyone like this? Even if you have the perfect product or solution for these people, you’re not going to get their business. They either know it all or dont want to know. Marketing to this group is a waste of your time and money. You’ll get a much better response by targeting your prospects more precisely. That means marketing to what your prospects are looking for. You’ll end up spending less and making more. Steve needed to focus his marketing on car owners who want to fix a problem or prevent one from developing. In Steve’s case a few changes to his marketing letter could make a huge difference. With a few questions he could help his prospects identify their concerns and then give them some helpful maintenance tips that involve his services. You can do the same. With a few changes to your marketing strategy and your marketing copy you’ll get a much better response and see your business soar. 2006 In Mind Communications, LLC. All rights reserved. The Drawbacks to Book Buyback Programs

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Michael Mould It is easy for me to rattle off a bunch of statistics about the cost of college textbooks from a university bookstore versus the online prices for the same books, but to compare apples to apples, I looked up several books currently being required for freshman courses at a university close to my own city. I found the average price per book was $101.71 if purchased from the university book store for a new book. The same books if purchased new online would cost $71.67, and if purchased online in “As New” condition would cost $57.33. Thus, a college student wanting to buy new books online could save 29.5%, and if he/she were willing to accept “As New” books, which for all practical and aesthetic purposes are new books, he/she would save 43.6%. Next, I used one of the online buyback websites to find out how much they would pay for these books if I had them to sell. For the new books required for a single freshman semester, that I would have to pay the university bookstore $712.12 to purchase, these buyback services would pay me $38.60. That is only 5.4% of what I would have to pay for them. No wonder the buy back services are so eager to buy college textbooks at the end of every term and show up in numbers trying to entice college students to sell them their unwanted textbooks. As an online bookseller myself, I know these types of margins are indeed realistic. I would be happy to give anyone $38.60 for some used textbooks that I knew I could resell for $500+ as used books too, but I don’t show up on campus at the end of each term to take advantage of college students. Not only do these margins apply to college textbooks, they apply to other books as well. A while back I bought a copy of “Kate: The Kate Moss Book,” by Kate Moss, ISBN 0789301016, for $0.49 at a used book store. I sold the book online for $199.99, which is a nice profit. If I had opted to sell this book to one of the buyback services I would have gotten $3.24 (I looked up the buyback price immediately before posting this article). While buying something for $0.49 and selling it for $3.24 is not a bad profit margin, 561%, I see no reason to settle for a profit of $2.75 when I could wait a month and make another $196.26, do you? This is exactly what thousands of college students do at the end of every term. They settle for a little bit of chump change for a few beers when they could sell their unwanted textbooks online and get a lotmore for them by waiting a few weeks. They could also save a lot of money by learning about online bookselling and where to find the best textbook prices and not pay full list price for every book they buy. A little bit of time investigating online bookselling could definitely save the typical college student a lot of money over the course of their education. Michael E. Let Your Losses Be Your Gain

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Sandra Garth There are many factors to consider when your goal is fat loss. I’m going to outline some steps you may want to take in reaching that goal. To lose weight for good means that you have to make some changes in your dietary and exercise habits. We all know that old habits die hard, and change can sometimes be difficult. Try these tips one at a time. It has been said that for something to become a habit it takes about 2-3 weeks. Attempting to rearrange your entire lifestyle all at once is too overwhelming and will only set you up for disappointment. Eat more often. Try 5-6 smaller meals instead of 3 larger ones. This avoids the wild swings in insulin that many people experience when they eat 3 large meals a day. Insulin is very important in the body. Very high levels are usually not desirable since insulin can shut down the body’s fat burning mechanism. (Those people who have a history of diabetes may want to check with their doctors before changing your dietary habits). Keep a diary of what you eat. Many people underestimate how many calories they actually eat. Buy a food scale if that will help you to weigh out your portion. Know the amount of calories, fat grams, proteins, and carbohydrates, in the foods you eat. Try not to lose more than a pound or two a week. If you’re losing faster than this you are losing muscle and not fat. The slower you lose weight the more permanent the results. A combination of aerobics and resistance training is the best exercise you can get. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns at rest, since muscle is a metabolically active tissue and require calories to maintain. Although you don’t burn a lot of calories during a resistance training session, you burn a lot afterwards. (Forgive me for sounding like a broken record on this one, but it is crucial in achieving your fitness goals) Don’t pay too much attention to the scale. The scale can’t tell the difference between muscle and fat. Your bodyweight could stay the same but you could be gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time. The type of foods you eat matters also. Try eating food high in fiber. Include more fruits and vegetables, less fats and sugars. Always look for the low fat alternative, and learn to substitute. Proper caloric intake will vary from person to person. First of all, try to find out how many calories you’re eating now. If your bodyweight has stayed relatively constant, then this amount of calories is approximately how many you need to maintain your present weight. Your next step would be to create a calorie deficit. This is done by eating fewer calories, and increasing the amount of exercise you are getting. If your drop your calorie intake, don’t do it by much. Very low calorie intakes can result in loss of muscle tissue and will also slow down your metabolism. You may also consider cycling your caloric intake. That means that you take in below the amount you need one day and then the amount needed to maintain the weight you are at now. This way, you calories will average out below that maintenance level for the week. Now it’s time to take the next step. Put your good health and well being at the top of this list and you’re well on your way to a healthy and energetic lifestyle. Sandra L. Garth is a wellness writer and consultant. Garden Tips: Landscaping with Stones

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Carlo Morelli A patio or a garden is a place where you expect to find comfort and peace, a place where you want to bring the nature closer to you, especially if you live in a city. For this purpose, you should symbolize the relation between nature and human, by using natural elements like stones or water. Landscaping with stones is the solely and the most at hand solution. If you intend to bring nature as close as possible, then the best option is definitely represented by the landscaping with stones, be it the case of water stones or regular, mountain stones. What stones do is to bring completion to the process of creating a relaxing, comfortable and charming environment. Besides the plants or the small waterfalls, a beautifully organized landscaping with stones is sure to augment the value and the beauty of the space. The more precious the stones youre using, the more valuable can your propriety become. If arranged correctly and with the help of a professional designer, your stone arrangements are sure to make a blast, a fantastic impression on the viewer and on your visitors. A skillful organization of the stones brings out that feeling of freshness, of peace and calm. Landscaping with stones, also named hardscape, requires great skills of organization, especially if the space doesnt allow you too much. For this reason, the best job can be done by a specialist in this field, by a person who knows how to integrate and how to combine all the natural elements, be it the case of plants, trees and/or stones. A professional knows exactly what to place where and how to combine the components in order to attain your purpose. Therefore, I advise you not to begin constructing and decorating the landscaping with stones, unless you have previously had a meeting with a designer. The amount of stone that you want to use in the decoration of your house depends on several things. In the first place, it depends on how much time and money you are willing to spend with the landscaping with stone. Some people keep it simple and decorate with stone only the driveway entrance, while others prefer a more rustic atmosphere by landscaping with stone almost every inch of their garden or they even go inside the house. In the second place, it depends on what type of environment you want to create when landscaping with stones, because some prefer a simpler, a more modest, not too crowded places. In this case, they choose to use only a small quantity of stones. The answer to this question is simple: anywhere you like. Most prefer the landscaping with stones in their patios, due to the fact that it is an open space and the stones seem natural outdoors. The patios are, in fact, what connect the interior to the exteriors, thus creating a bond between the house and the landscaping. The landscaping with stones actually creates outdoor living spaces, spaces that become familiar and relaxing. More extravagant people prefer decorating their entire house with stones. This landscaping with stones is therefore a matter of preference and choice when it comes to the amount of stones used. Some use stones only in their outdoor spaces, other use them everywhere, from their living-rooms to their bathrooms or balconies. You can use stones to decorate the walls, the paths in your garden, the interior or the exterior columns, for the outbuilding or in the water gardens. An important aspect in the landscaping with stones is represented by the colors and by the shapes of the stones that you choose according to your desired style and imagination. For all these you should just consult a professional expert in this field. Visit http://www.onlinetips.org and read tips on how to make the most of a small yard and xeriscaping. Bible Prophecy Fulfilled: Messiah to Appear in Jerusalem in A.D. 31

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Britt Gillette One of the most amazing prophecies in the Old Testament is found in the Book of Daniel. The angel Gabriel appears to Daniel and reveals to him the exact number of days that will pass between the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem and the time the Messiah will appear in Jerusalem and be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing. Only one historical persons life fulfills this prophecy of the Messiah: Jesus of Nazareth. This is what Gabriel tells Daniel: A period of seventy sets of seven has been decreed for your people and your holy city to put down rebellion, to bring an end to sin, to atone for guilt, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to confirm the prophetic vision, and to anoint the Most Holy One. Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One comes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses, despite the perilous times. After this period of sixty-two sets of seven, the Anointed One will be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the City and the Temple. Daniel 9:24-26 (NLT) According to the Book of Daniel, 483 years [(7 x 7) + (62 x 7)] will pass between the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One comes. Since a biblical year is 360 days, were actually being told that 173,880 days will pass. So to find out if this prophecy was fulfilled, we only need to count forward 173,880 days from the time of the command and see if anyone entered Jerusalem and was killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing. If such a person exists, the Word of God confirms that person is the Messiah. So when was the command given? The Book of Nehemiah tells us. In the month of Nisan, during the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes reign, I was serving the king his wine. I had never appeared sad in his presence before this time. So the king asked me, Why are you so sad? You arent sick, are you? You look like a man with deep troubles. Then I was badly frightened, but I replied, Long live the king! Why shouldnt I be sad? For the city where my ancestors are buried is in ruins, and the gates have been burned down. The king asked, Well, how can I help you? With a prayer to the God of heaven, I replied, If it please Your Majesty and if you are pleased with me, your servant, send me to Judah to rebuild the city where my ancestors are buried. The king, with the queen sitting beside him, asked, How long will you be gone? When will you return? So the king agreed, and I set a date for my departure. I also said to the king, If it please Your Majesty, give me letters to the governors of the province west of the Euphrates River, instructing them to let me travel safely through their territories on my way to Judah. And please send a letter to Asaph, the manager of the kings forest, instructing him to give me timber. I will need it to make beams for the gates of the Temple fortress, for the city walls, and for a house for myself. And the king granted these requests, because the gracious hand of God was on me. Nehemiah 2:1-8 (NLT) According to the Book of Nehemiah, the command to rebuild Jerusalem was given in the 20th year of the reign of Artaxerxes (446 B.C.) during the month of Nisan (March/April). Using an online Calendar Conversion Tool, we can calculate the time frame in which the prophecy must be fulfilled. Counting 173,880 days into the future from Nissan 1 to Nissan 30 in the year 446 B.C. (the year 3315 in the Jewish Calendar), we learn that the prophecy must be fulfilled between the dates of 13 April A.D. 31 and 12 May A.D. 31: Gregorian Calendar: 20 March 446 B.C.Jewish Calendar: 1 Nisan 3315 +173,880 days (360 days x 483 years) Gregorian Calendar: 13 April A.D. 31Jewish Calendar: 4 Iyyar 3791 and Gregorian Calendar: 18 April 446 B.C.Jewish Calendar: 30 Nisan 3315 +173,880 days (360 days x 483 years) Gregorian Calendar: 12 May A.D. 31Jewish Calendar: 4 Sivan 3791 Did anyone appear in Jerusalem between 13 April A.D. 31 and 12 May A.D. 31 who fulfilled the prophecies of the Messiah and was killed, appearing to accomplish nothing? Yes. Jesus of Nazareth. During the Passover festivities in Jerusalem in the year A.D. 31, Jesus was killed in such a way. According to David Reagans commentary on the subject, the New Testament provides evidence that two Sabbaths occurred, one on Thursday and one on Saturday, during the week of Jesus of Nazareths crucifixion. Given other historical records and evidence, we can be certain that the crucifixion of Jesus occurred on the 24th of April A.D. 31, a date that falls between the predetermined timeframe of 13 April to 12 May for the Messiahs appearance. This is because biblical scholars unanimously agree that this event occured between the years A.D. 30 and A.D. 37, and the only year during this timeframe in which the celebrations of the Passover week included both Thursday and Saturday Sabbaths was A.D. 31. Thus, we can be certain that Jesus of Nazareth fulfilled the requirements of this messianic prophecy. He also fulfilled all the other messianic Old Testament prophecies. No other historical individual appeared during April/May of A.D. 31 who could fulfill this prophecy. Furthermore, Daniel 9:26 predicted, after this period of sixty-two sets of seven a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the City and the Temple. Did this happen? Yes. In A.D. 70, thirty-nine years after Jesus was killed, a ruler named Titus (who later became Emperor of Rome), led the Roman legions into Jerusalem where they destroyed the City and the Temple. This completed the messianic prophecy of Daniel 9:24-26, and made it impossible for anyone to appear after the year A.D. 70 and make a legitimate claim to fulfillment of the messianic prophecies. History and the Old Testament prophecies are clear: Jesus of Nazareth is the Anointed One, the Messiah, the Holy One of God, and the Lamb of God. As a human being, the most important thing you can do in your life is investigate these claims and build a personal relationship with Jesus. Locations Where Foreclosures Are Nearly Blooming

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By Jeff Lakie The home foreclosure market if that is a proper term to use is blooming, but not evenly across the nation. True, home foreclosures can be found in virtually every town or neighborhood across America but there are areas where foreclosures are much higher than in other areas. Lets take a look at several areas around the country where the number of foreclosures appears to be the highest. Southern California The Golden States huge run up the housing market shows little sign in ebbing. That being said, many buyers who jumped into the housing market just a few years ago are finding that their adjustable rate mortgages are beyond their ability to repay. What had once been a good deal for these owners has turned into a bad deal as the adjustment period kicks in. Paying $500 or more per month over an already high mortgage rate is catastrophic for some. Fortunately, some buyers will be able to refinance or sell out in a hot market. Northern New Jersey Like Southern California, the 12 counties closest to New York City have seen a huge run up in prices over the past decade. On the other hand, some towns have seen their housing markets flatten out as local price corrections kick in. For owners who were on the edge before this time, they can be pushed over the edge as their mortgage readjusts too. Unfortunately, many of these owners will lose their overvalued homes as willing buyers are only looking for a bargain. South Florida Hurricane damage notwithstanding, the southernmost market of the Sunshine State remains overheated. Unfortunately, some homeowners are sweating it out as they deal with homes that still need to be repaired, job displacement, and big mortgage payments. Default rates in some counties are up under such pressure. Falling Markets Across there are pockets of housing markets where prices are finally retreating. While this is good news for buyers, it is terrible news for homeowners who may end up owning more for their home then it is worth. Couple that information with ongoing financial pressures and homeowners and mortgage companies are likely to lose their shirts with any sale. Of course, the painfulness for one party could be the gainfulness for another party. If you are in the right place at the right time, then you could capitalize on a fast changing housing market and come out the winner. Thinning Out and Watering Your Vegetable Seedlings

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Terry Blackburn Thinning Out Begin to thin out the seedlings as early as possible; not only will this allow the remainder the extra space to develop properly, it will also stop those which are not required taking up the nutrients needed to feed the remainder. Never leave those seedlings, which have been pulled out to remain on the surface, as these will attract pests, particularly in the instance of carrots and onions, as they are prone to attacks from flies. Watering It is impossible to grow succulent vegetables unless there is sufficient moisture in the soil. Good quality crops are grown in soil that is rich in humus and with sufficient moisture. Lack of moisture lowers the sugar content of the plants and causes them to become bitter and leathery. During dry periods the crop will need to be watered and this in itself can cause a problem; a watering can is generally inefficient, whilst the pressure from a garden hose is too great and can wash out the soil from around the seedlings roots. It is possible to rig up a sprinkler system fixed onto a frame above or on the ground that a hose can be attached too. An automatic watering system takes the work out of watering - it waters your plants properly all through the season, and keeps the amount of water you use in the garden tightly under control. It consists of a network of pipes that carry water around the garden, and tiny water outlets that deliver the water directly to your plants. You can use a system in conjunction with an electronic timer, which attaches directly to your outside tap, the system will run itself, watering as often and for as long as you choose. The amount of water required will depend on the season, on the crop and on the soil. Heavy, clay soils may require only half the amount needed for dry, sandy soils. The crops will require watering in a dry summer but only moderately in showery summer season. Shallow-rooted crops suffer far more during a dry summer then do the deeper-rooted ones. Make sure those crops such as lettuce, spinach, radish, spring onion, early potatoes; turnips, cauliflowers, celery and celeriac have adequate water. Many people are concerned that they will create leaf-scorch problems if water is given on a bright, sunny day. This is only the case if the water is applied in large droplets as those from a watering can as the droplets act as a lens similar to a piece of glass, which when bright sunlight falls on them will burn what ever is beneath. Water that is finely sprayed onto the plants wet the leaves evenly and in fact will help revert the problem of wilt, and possibly save those plants which might otherwise die if water were not to be given during this period. Make quite sure that enough water is given to soak deep down to the roots. In excessively wet weather water can wash away nutriments from the soil, however careful fertilizing and manuring can replace these. I believe that most gardeners will be aware that some crops will do better than others and this will be governed to a great extent to which part of the country you garden. In the south, and more particularly in the southwest it is usually possible to sow and plant much earlier than in the north and northeast. The difference may be as much as two or three weeks. In some years there are serious frosts that can persist through May, while in some seasons there is early summer warmth even in March. With experience the gardener will be able to judge the optimum time to begin cultivation in his or her own district and this coupled with the guidance given by the instructions on the seed packets will accomplish a successful growing season.
