How to Grow Globe Artichokes

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Terry Blackburn There are two types of artichoke, Globe and Jerusalem. The globe is a perennial with a thistle-like head complete with scales surrounding a fleshy frond or heart, which is the part with the most flavour. The Jerusalem artichoke is grown for its tubers, which are produced in the soil like potatoes. This too is a perennial, though is more conveniently grown by digging up the tubers each season and replanting the best specimens the following year, as in the case of potatoes. Soil Preparation The soil must be well drained to grow artichokes; it should be moist in the summer but dry in the winter. They require a sunny position for the unopened flower heads have more flavour when they are grown in full sun. A sheltered position is also required as the flower stems grow tall and are easily blown over. In the autumn dig the ground over to a spades depth, incorporating manure and some well-rotted compost at the rate of a bucketful to the sq. yd. then leave the ground rough to over winter. Fork the ground level in spring, adding fish manure at a rate of 3 oz. (76mm) to the sq. yd. This dressing should be repeated each year in March or early April. Planting The plants should be purchased from a reliable nurseryman; you can later increase your stock plants by severing the side growths or suckers, which will later develop at the base of each plant. These should be cut from the parent plant when they are about 9 in. (228mm) long, taking care that there is a part of the old plants root at base. Plant the new shoots in April in rows 3 ft (90cm) apart, allowing 3 ft. (90cm) between the plants. If you garden in the North then you should take your suckers during November and pot them up individually into 6 in. (152mm) pots, protect them from frost until the following May, when they can be re-planted into the bed. General Care Keep down the weeds, gently hoeing between the plants reducing the surrounding soil to a fine dust to about in. (12mm) layer of loose soil over the surface of the ground. If the artichokes are not growing sturdily by June, top dress with dried blood to promote better growth. When autumn arrives the plants should be given some protection against the on coming winter frosts. Straw is excellent for this purpose and it should be laid over each plant and a net drawn over the top and secured will keep the straw in place. If the straw becomes too wet, it should be replaced at intervals throughout the winter. Artichoke plants can last for as long as 12 years or more though it is good practise to replace the plants after 5 or 6 years to continue vitality and vigour in your stock. Harvesting The flower heads are not produced the first year, in the early summer of the second year, the large thistle-like heads which develop should be cut just before they open. Cut the main head, known as the king head, first. Secondary growths will then develop, each of which will produce a tender flower head. These are cut when they are the size of a large hens egg. For better flavour, cut no more than 1 hour before you intend to cook them. Terry Blackburn. Internet Marketing Consultant, living in South Shields in the North-East of England. Jar Lid and Jar Candle Decoration

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Michelle Gauthier Supplies Needed: Most items can be found around the house or in a craft store. Jar Candle with lid with removable plastic bottom Craft Glue Paint Scissors Decorating Candle Jars and Lids is a fun and easy project for all ages. You can use many different craft items to embellish your jar and lid. If you are really creative, you could even make a snow globe out of the lid. But we are going to go over a few inexpensive ideas to turn your Jar into an attractive looking and still functional decoration. Most jar lids come with a plastic under cap, which can be taken off by a screw driver. In this space you can add many different things, from dried flowers to an elaborate scene. One of my favorite things to do is to add fake flowers and greens to my lid, typically using the same color flower as my jar wax. Everything can be placed at the top of the lid and adding green leaves to keep it secure. Sand, Rocks or Marble pieces can add a different look to the lid. One great idea is to use different layers of colored sand. Just make sure you fill it to the top, because the under cap will have a little bit of space. You’ll get the same look as those colored bottles that you can buy at fairs. For rocks, try using some Aquarium rocks, as they come in multiple colors. You can add a more personal touch by adding a picture or personal message in the lid. Just cut the picture to fit the lid and put some kind of background behind it. One idea is to use a nice piece of colored felt or velvet fabric. By adding enough fabric, you can be assured the picture will stay where it is. I do not recommend using glue on the top of the lid, as it will be visible. You can also just use a pattern fabric to place inside the lid. A great idea would to use a pattern that is in your room, maybe a leftover piece of wallpaper. Then you have a matching Jar to your room. Don’t laugh, but I cut off a small piece of fabric from the underside of my chair to use in a lid, so that it matched my furniture. The jar itself can be decorated in so many ways, its impossible to list them all here. So I’ll show a design and some ideas that I thought would be great to give as a gift to someone. One of my favorite designs is to use my old Christmas cards or a specific holiday card as a design on my jar. Cut the card it to fit the jar, and then glue it to the jar using crafters glue or glue dots. This is a great idea for a gift around Valentines or Christmas time. You could even use the inside of the card with the message. And to top it off, adding a picture of yourself on the other side of the jar, will add a nice personal touch. There are many things you can do to decorate your jar. Using some of the ideas above, like the pattern in the lid, you can also use it on the jar. Some other ideas are, painting a scene or message on the jar, gluing ribbon strips vertically to add stripes, gluing flowers to the base, adding your own custom label and something as simple as red lipstick kisses all over the jar. Your creativity holds no bounds. So have fun and try anything, I bet it will come out fabulous. Demon Possession is it Real or Just a Mental Disorder

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Robert Benjamin Just about everyone these days has heard about ‘ demon possession ‘, it was made a household name by the 1973 movie ‘ The Exorcist ‘, and again it has become popular after the 2005 movie ‘ The Exorcism Of Emily Rose ‘. To myself and thousands of others, we have known and believed in demon possession for a long time from another source, the Holy Bible. The Bible written in sections or books, some more than a couple thousand years ago, tells us all we need to know about demon possession and that it is a very real condition. In this day and age, when you mention demons or demon possession, most folks laugh or joke about it. Do these same folks laugh and joke about the Holy Bible ? To laugh and joke about the belief of demons and demon possession, is the same as laughing and joking about the Holy Bible and the word of God. If you are a true Christian and you believe in the Holy Bible as being the divinely inspired word of God, then you should have no doubts about the existence of demons and demon possession. What are demons ? Demons are supernatural beings with great power and knowledge, their knowledge comes from not just their high intelligence, but the fact that they have been alive since before the earth was created. They are often called or known as ‘ fallen angels ‘, in fact that is exactly what they are. When satan rebelled against God, he along with his followers, (1/3 rd of the angels of heaven), were cast out of the Third Heaven, where God’s throne and the actual city or place called Heaven currently exists. These ex-angels, now called ‘ demons ‘, were banished forever from the 3rd heaven where they once worshipped God and his son Jesus. Now for thousands of years, they have been condemned to live in what is called heavens 1 and 2, this area encompasses the planet earth, the sky above it, the stars, planets and the solar systems beyond it. Demons are usually invisible in their natural state to the human eye, but they can take on any solid form they wish, and then we can see them. Demons can appear as wips of what looks like smoke, lasting only a few seconds, or at other times they look like fleeting shadows, often seen out of the corners of the eyes. They can take on any shape they choose, even an animal, they can appear solid or transparent and ghost-like. What does the Bible tell us about demons and some of their abilities: 1. Demons seem to desire a body to possess or use as a host, like a parasite. It could be that when they were cast down from Heaven that they were changed into another form, or they just have a strong desire to control and cause as much trouble to humans as they possibly can. In ‘ Mark 5:12 ‘, when Jesus was exorcising demons from a possessed man, the demons spoke to Jesus and begged him, saying: ‘ Send us among the herd of pigs; allow us to go into them ‘. 2. Demons have great strength. In ‘ Luke 8:29 ‘, a man was possessed by demons, and while possessed he was able to break chains easily, the demons also made the man want to dwell among graves and lonely places.3. The demons are responsible for many of the diseases and illnesses that people have. In ‘ Luke 11:14 ‘ , a man that had been mute and unable to speak, became able to speak normaly when Jesus removed a demon from him. What are some causes of demon possession ? Sin. yes, sin is the cause or thing that leads to someone being controlled and ultimately possessed by demonic forces: 1. Abuse - Some folks claim they were abused as children, and this has brought them under the control of demons. 2. Occult Activity - Reading and trying spells and other things in occult books. 3. Spirit communication - Using an ouija board, channeling, or automatic writing, is an open door to demon possession. 4. Astrology and Fortune Telling - Using ones horoscope or visiting a fortune teller to know the future is wrong according to the bible, clearly a warning that demonic forces are involved with it. 5. Music and Movies - Movies and music can be fun and inspirational, but most of the movies today are very sinful. Todays movies are full of such sinful things as sexual encounters that are out of marriage or with the same sex, cussing or using Jesus’s name in vain, and there are numerous movies these days that show or try to let us think that dabbling with spells, sorcery and witchcraft are ok, when the Bible clearly says that any witchcraft or sorcery is wrong and can open the door to demon forces. 6. Sexual perversions - Pornography is very addicitve and often leads to more and more perverted sexual desires, such as same sex encounters and sex with animals which is growing more and more in todays perverted world, all of which is evil and wrong according to the Bible and Jesus. Demons can use these filthy and perverted desires to weaken our wills and mental states, until we allow them to enter us, and possess us. There are many other activites and things that can ultimately lead to someone becoming possessed and controlled by demon forces, but the main cause is sin. There are a lot of folks that say demon possession is just symptoms of either a mental illness or some other medical condition, or sickness. This can be true at times when the person does have a medical problem, but in a true case of demon possession, there will be signs or activity that NO sickness or disease can manifest, such as: 1. Knowledge of future events and hidden things - Demon possessed people have been known to gain a sudden knowledge about things that was never shared with others, or to even reveal future events that come true. 2. Superhuman strength - Possessed individuals have been known to break ropes, chains and other restraints with ease, and it often takes up to 4 full grown men to hold a demon possessed child down. 3. Speaking in unknown or strange languages - Demon possessed inviduals who have no prior knowledge of foreign languages have been known to start taking fluently in strange languages or foreign tongues, such as Aramaic, Latin and other languages. 4. Levitation and Psychic Powers - Demon possessed individuals have been known to levitate and hover in the air in front of other witnesses, or cause objects in the room to move by themselves. 5. Smells - Often in the presence of a demon possessed individual the surrounding air will become so horriblly smelling that folks will get sick, the smell has been described as the smell of cancer or death, or even sulphur. 5. Reaction to Holy relics or sacred items - Demon possessed individuals have been known to fear or even react violently to crosses, bible reading, holy water or other sacred relics and symbols. In one case of demon possession in pennsylvania in the early 1980s a young man, who was possessed had his head covered with a sack, so he could not see. He held his hands behind his back and a few different items were placed in his hands, when a cross was dropped into his hand, it burned his skin and became hot to others that touched it. The best way to avoid demon activity and possession in your life is to avoid sin as much as possible. Read your bible as often as you can, go to a nice bible believing church, and most importantly, accept Jesus Christ as your lord and saviour, repent of your sins, and try not to sin like you did before your conversion. As we are now living in what I call the ‘ End Times ‘, we will be seeing and hearing a lot more news about possession and demon activity. If you would like to know a lot more about the ‘ End Times ‘, and read some great Christian articles on such subjects as ‘Being Saved, Armageddon, The Rapture, and much more, visit the website: ‘ Signs Of The End Times ‘ By Robert W. Ulcers Are No Laughing Matter

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=David_Grisaffi] David Grisaffi Peptic ulcers, which are in the stomach and the duodenum (the first part of the intestine leading from the stomach) can occur at any age and affect both men and women. Untreated, sufferers can look forward to a long siege with them. But today’s peptic ulcer sufferers have a brighter prospect for relief than did those of even a single generation ago. There is now less than 1 chance in 18 that surgery will every be necessary and new medications act faster and better and offer more relief than ever before. The warning sign of active ulcers you will most likely experience (if you get any warning at all) is a gnawing discomfort in the middle or upper abdomen that typically comes between meals or in the middle of the night. Food or liquids, including antacids and milk, can provide some temporary relief, but milk might not be all that good a remedy since it stimulates production of hydrochloric acid and other digestive juices which further aggravates the pain. Antacids blended from aluminum, calcium or magnesium salts, have long been the non prescription drugs most people quickly reach for to get relief from their stomach pains. But, because antacids interfere with absorption of some medications, be sure to go over this with your doctor and get his approval. You should never ignore any warning signs of ulcers. Ulcer complications are serious and in some cases can be life-threatening. If paid from ulcers persists after more than 10 to 14 days of self-treatment or comes back when treatment ends, you should see your doctor. The passing of blood through the bowels may be caused by some other problem, but it can also be an urgent warning of a bleeding ulcer. Bleeding ulcers can cause anemia or, if the ulcer gets larger it may expand into a major blood vessel, a leak can turn into a hemorrhage, with only minutes available for life saving emergency treatment. Ulcers can also perforate and may erode completely through the wall of the stomach or duodenum. If this happens and the stomachs contents flow into the abdominal cavity, severe infection can result. A perforated ulcer is an emergency that requires immediate surgery. It has been determined that smoking doubles a person’s risk for ulcer disease. Physicians and researches have found that ulcers heal a lot slower for smokers, and smokers also have a higher relapse rate. And you’re definitely at risk for ulcers if you take aspirin and any of the other products containing aspirin. High-dose Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Maproxen and Piroxicam are in wide use today for many conditions, especially to relive pain and swelling among the millions of people who have arthritis. These medications can irritate the stomachs lining and cause gastrointestinal bleeding. Ulcers have frequently been the target for humor in describing the stereotypical aggressive, pressured, goal-or-career-oriented person. But for those who have them, ulcers are certainly no laughing matter. Peptic ulcers strike 1 out of ever 50 Americans each year. As research continues, there is now mounting evidence that something other than smoking, drinking, spicy meals, or a possible battle with the boss may be associated with ulcers. It is now believed that ulcers are the result of a combination of conditions, the dynamics of which researchers don’t yet fully understand. About The Author David Grisaffi, C. H. E. K. Virgin Lobster 700Tv - Watch - Free

Friday, August 24th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Samuel_Herrick]Samuel Herrick Watching television shows on your mobile phone, have been an year old phenomenon now. But in most of the cases you have to pay heavy charges to avail the advantage. Virgin Lobster 700 TV is a kind of TV mobile phone, where the users get to watch what they want- sans having to pay for any data cost. This type of service is first of a kind in the UK market, and all ready to capture the attention of the users. Shaped as the claw of a lobster, the prowess of the Virgin Lobster 700 TV lies on its DAB tuner. Which means the users can tune in to more than 50 channels and currently three simulcast television channels. The channels being - BBC One, ITV1 and E4, and Channel 4. Since the device is all about watching, it is but obvious that the handset is enabled with a quality display for optimum experience. The Virgin Lobster 700 TV features 2.2 inches screen with good resolution and finish. Further, it also has a direct TV button that is user friendly and also doubles as the interactive button. One gets the benefits of the handset so long one is under the coverage of DAB area, which is not a problem, as 85% of UK is under the DAB zone. Signal is found through the Virgin Lobster 700 TV’s headphone cable doubling up as the aerial to boost reception. But everything is not as impeccable as it sounds. The Virgin Lobster 700 TV does come with some tune in problem. As long as you are in one place getting coverage, the TV looks fine, but the moment you move, you can suffer from signal loss and everything could go downhill. Further, like all portable radios, when you start losing signal in Virgin Lobster 700 TV, reviving the signal is a big tasks. In most of the cases the signal is lost forever. Thus, we can say, that as a concept Virgin Lobster 700 TV is sure a super star. But if it desires to win some Oscars, it has to show more credibility in terms of locking on to a signal to get TV. Don’t Be Surprised!

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Marsha Jordan Life wasn’t easy for cave men. They had to hunt all day, kill their dinner with a club, and drag the carcass to the cave. Then they had to butcher the animal and rub sticks together for a fire to cook it. They made clothes from the leftovers. And I think I have it rough when the husband wants me to cook instead of picking up carry out! Life wasn’t easy for our ancestors who crossed oceans seeking freedom. It wasn’t easy for pioneers who fought wild Indians, and settled the wilderness. Life has never been easy for past generations. It won’t be any different for us. I used to think I would arrive some day at that magical age when everything would be easy and problem free. Now I’ve wised up and learned this simple math equation: life = problems. Trouble is a natural part of life like taxes, Big Macs, bad hair days, and Leave it to Beaver reruns. If you expect to have an idyllic life like Ward and June Cleaver, you may be in for disappointment. No matter how good life can be, there will always be some difficulty mixed in. Expecting to face some trouble can help us deal with it more effectively. When Herbert Hoover decided to go into politics, he knew he would get criticism, but he went ahead anyway. Later he said, “When the criticism came, I wasn’t surprised; I was better able to handle it.” The Bible confirms that hardships should not surprise us. The apostle Peter wrote, “Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial, which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you.” (1 Peter 5: 12, 13) So why am I sometimes surprised when hassles come my way? Loved one get sick or hurt, people lose jobs or homes. These things happen in life: car trouble, financial trouble, and in-law trouble. Unfortunately, none of us is exempt from problems. Do you sometimes feel that trouble attacks you like a swarm of angry bees? You swat one, and two more sneak up and sting you from behind. But don’t let that depress you; we have hope! I was shocked when I realized life isn’t just about what I want, and I’m not here just to enjoy a pain-free life. When I asked myself what my life’s purpose was, I realized God created me to get to know Him, to serve and glorify Him, and to become more like Him. The Bible says we need to be transformed. (Romans 12:2) That’s not a miraculous happening. It’s a process that involves problems. Problems are not only a normal part of life, but they’re a necessary part too. They prepare us for the future. Not just the future five years from now, but also for the future that comes after our earthly lives end. Only in heaven is life perfect and easy. But with each problem comes a chance to fulfill your purpose on earth, to learn something new, and to develop a more godly character. It can be difficult to remember this, though, when you’re buried in heartache. The good thing about pain is that it helps me put my focus where it should be, on the only one who can help me cope. When I practice depending upon Him rather than myself, I fulfill my purpose. People often learn lessons during tough times that they could never have learned if life had been easy. I’ve found that I more fully enjoy beauty, since I nearly lost my ability to see it. Think about a frightening circumstance you were forced to endure, and ask yourself what positive result came from it. Chances are you gained some special gift or grew spiritually in some way, not in spite of your ordeal, but because of it. That’s why I say this life is merely a practice run or testing ground. It teaches us, stretches and sharpens us, strengthens us, and prepares us for eternity. There are many unhappy endings in this life, but we can embrace hope knowing that the next life will not only be happier, but it will have no end. When we understand that difficulties are inevitable and that we can’t handle them on our own, we realize why it’s important to develop a relationship with the all-powerful God before those trials come. It’s good to know that we have a close relationship with, and are dearly loved by, the only one who can provide the strength, perseverance, and courage we will undoubtedly need throughout life. He’s just waiting for us to ask for His help. “He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when He hears it, He will answer you.” (Isaiah 30:19) Author Marsha Jordan is founder of a nonprofit charity called Hugs and Hope for Sick Children (http://www.hugsandhope.org). More of her articles on depression are in her book, Hugs, Hope, and Peanut Butter, a compilation of essays illustrated with drawings by critically ill children. Pain is never easy, but it’s more bearable with the healing power of laughter; and you’ll laugh with the author as she recounts, in Erma Bombeck style, her search for the perfect purse, camping adventures, her badly behaved toy poodle, and her experience with a new magnifying mirror. Some chapter titles include, “Limburger Attitude, “The Joy of Shopping,” “Is Broccoli Hazardous?” and “Life in the Manure Pile.” She also outlines ten tips for beating depression, written from her own experience of battling this illness for most of her life. Job Interview Tips

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Shelley Worth Make a good first impression Appearance is perhaps the most critical element of building a positive first impression. Employers assume that what they see is what theyll get if they hire your candidate, so make sure that what they see is a consummate professional. Understand that dressing professionally is one of the rules of the business game. Dont expect to win the game if your break that rule. Pay attention to details Interviewers notice the little things. Sloppy manicures, missing buttons, scuffed shoes, stained lapels or snagged stocking are interpreted as signs that the candidate isnt detail-oriented. So make sure your entire outfit is impeccably clean and neat. For women, makeup is often a downfall. Keep it subtle. No cologne or perfume Nearly all of the interviewers I surveyed mentioned cologne-overkill as one of the biggest gaffes made by both male and female job candidates. In fact, many interviewers rated this as their number-one gripe! Its nearly impossible to tell how strong an odour your own perfume or cologne is emitting. What seems like a pleasant whiff of scent to you may overpower someone else. Dont risk it. Another smell-related note: If youre a smoker, avoid smoking in the hours before your interview. At the very least, dont smoke in your interview outfit. Employers generally regard smoking as an undesirable habit, and cigarette odours cling to clothes for hours. Watch your body language As theyre forming an impression of you, interviewers also observe your body language for clues about your personality, credibility and confidence. Heres a rundown of the most common body-language signals and what they mean to interviewers. Look them in the eye In North American culture, the ability to look someone in the eye is interpreted as a sign of honesty. For that reason, interviewers react negatively to job candidates who cant maintain a reasonable amount of eye contact. Greet the interviewer with a firm handshake Again, because of cultural stereotypes, someone who has a firm handshake is regarded as confident and authoritative. Even though a handshake may seem like a small element on which to base a decision about someones character, interviewers really do read a lot into it. Dont Fidget Be careful that your body language doesnt betray your nervousness during your interviews. Avoid these mannerisms that interviewers perceive as signs of nervousness: Leg kicking. Touching your hair repeatedly. Placing your hand near your mouth or around your face as you talk. Clearing your throat continually. Tapping your fingers or (worse) cracking your knuckles. Playing with your jewellery or frequently adjusting your glasses. If you feel your body getting out of control, try focusing on your breathing: Taking steady, deep breaths will help you relax. Its also good to take a short walk before your interview to burn off some of that nervous energy. Sit forward in your chair Interviewers take note of how candidates sit during the interview. Candidates who slump in their chairs or appear too relaxed are perceived as either unconfident or unmotivated or both. Candidates who sit up straight and lean a bit forward in their chairs are perceived as attentive and interested in the job. But also dont lean on or throw yourself across the interviewers desk. Respect the rules of interview etiquette Just as there are rules of etiquette for social interactions, there are rules of etiquette for the interaction we call the job interview. Although they may seem unimportant to you, these rules are very important to interviewers. Employers assume that if you dont know anything about interview etiquette, you may not understand the rules of everyday-business etiquette, either. Be on time One of the basic laws of interview etiquette and one thats broken with surprisingly regularity is to arrive on time. Allow plenty of extra time to get to your interview; you never know when a traffic jam or other transportation catastrophe is going to occur. If you rum late because of some unavoidable problem, call ahead to let the interviewer know. Apologise profusely and ask whether the interviewer would prefer to reschedule. Remember that youre the guest Interview etiquette also says that you are the guest and the interviewer is the host. So dont sit down until the interviewer invites you to do so. Dont plop your briefcase down on the interviewers desk, and dont start fingering any office knickknacks, even if its one of those inviting little stress-relief gizmos. If you spy family pictures on the interviewers desk, resist the urge to comment, even though you might naturally do so if you were visiting that persons home. Raising the issue of families and children is something you want to avoid in an interview. Dont chew gum or eat Dont have anything in your mouth during the interview. That includes mints or gum. If the interviewer offers you a cup of coffee or other beverage, say that you will join them if they are having refrain if they are not. Dont dismiss anyone Be friendly, polite and respectful toward everyone you meet, from the receptionist at the front door to the interviewers secretary. Theres a good chance that all of these people will be asked to offer an opinion about you. So treat every encounter as a silent interview. Be enthusiastic Nearly all of the hiring managers who have shared their insights with me said that one of the first things they notice is the amount of enthusiasm a job candidate displays. Many said it was the most important element in whether they left the interview with a positive impression of the candidate. God Made Me Love

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Linda Dipman I walked into the Metropolitan church not knowing what to expect. For years I had lived isolated from people. I was afraid to reach out and be known as one of them. Twenty years earlier my family, friends, and church deserted me. They made me feel like an outcast. As if a huge brand was burnt into my forehead declaring to the whole world that I was a sinner. I wasn’t prepared for how different my world was going to become when I started to really love for the first time. A love that made my heart jump a beat in excitement. A love that took my breath away. The love I felt was so strong that I ran not caring what others would think. And the message from God was so clear that I threw all of my doubts away and ran towards the feelings that were inspiring me to love. A new thing began to happen in my life. A typed message from God declared a truth that I would have never learned if I had stayed in the life that I had before. A note resounding and filling my thoughts with ideas. New ideas I had never known before. Isaiah 55:8&9, “My thoughts,’ says the Lord, ‘are not like yours, and my ways are different from yours. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways and thoughts above yours.’” Scriptures filled the paper. Words I did not type. Ideas I had never understood before. It was as if the clouds parted and the light of the sun shone through. A bright light of wisdom. As I studied the scriptures and prayed for help God continued to help me understand why I would need Him more than I ever needed Him before. I was about to learn a truth that would dramatically change my way of thinking. God spent the next twenty years teaching me in the University of the World. A life school. With a Degree in understanding the purpose of my life. A quest that would make me stand against all those who believed I was evil. “My Ways Are Not Human Ways, Trust In Me, Pray for protection from Satan, God has Spoken! I love you Linda.” I took my scissors and cut out these words and placed them in my Bible. I would look at them from time to time when it was no longer necessary for God to speak to me through the typed page. I gained strength through knowing that all of the pain and suffering I was going through had a purpose. It was meant to change me into a new kind of person. Loving Tori cost me everything. Custody of my children, the respect and love of my parents, and the admiration of my church. I was a very religious person. Raised as a Baptist and trained in the doctrine of a very homophobic church. To be gay was to disobey God. It was in the Bible. To be gay is to be branded a life long sinner who was going to hell! A hell that would burn me for eternity. An eternity of punishment for practicing an evil sexual sin. Another message appeared instructing me to know that I was loved by God. A message that took away my confusion and placed me on solid ground that would lead me to the knowledge I needed to justify my change. God taught me and changed my way of thinking by making me love. He changed me through my emotions so I would do His will separate from the knowledge I had learned through the church. God changed my way of thinking through love. God is Love! To love is to do His Will. I don’t think most people understand the complexity of this world game. They don’t understand that our paths are predetermined before we ever begin to play. Paths that lead us to truths that are clouded by how this world thinks compared to how God thinks. God uses every part of our human make up to change us into new people. People who are changed by how they feel to how they believe. There must be differences in order for the love of God to prevail. Our differences lead us down paths of revelation. To be in a teaching world we must learn truths when the veil of darkness is parted and gives way to the dawn of a new understanding. Jesus explains this light when He tells his disciples why He speaks to people in parables. Matthew 13:10-13, “Then the disciples came to Jesus and asked him, ‘Why do you use parables when you talk to the people?’ Jesus answered, ‘The knowledge about the secrets of the Kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. For the person who has something will be given more, so that he will have more than enough; but the person who has nothing will have taken away from him even the little he has. The reason I use parables in talking to them is that they look, but do not see, and they listen, but do not hear or understand.’” Jesus goes on to tell His disciplines how fortunate they are because their eyes can see. He then explains to them the parables so they will understand the truth about this world. God uses people, our emotions and different cultures to teach us His truths in a wicked and adulterous world. Adultery represents a person who separates themselves from God. Matthew 13:37&38, “Jesus answered, ‘The man who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world; the good seed is the people who belong to the Kingdom; the weeds are the people who belong to the Evil One; ‘” The people of this world give themselves to it and refuse to acknowledge God. So when the tests of life happen they blame God and do whatever they feel regardless of who it hurts. To be in the University of the World we must understand that we will come up against opposition. Satan opposes love and he uses churches, people, and anyone who will stand on his side and hate the love of God. John 15:18-20, “If the world hates you, remember that it has hated me first. If you belonged to the world, then the world would love you as its own. But I chose you from this world, and you do not belong to it; that is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: ‘No slave is greater than this master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you too; if they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours too.” Entering into the church I saw people full of love. Yes, they were rejected by their families. Yes, they were persecuted by society and men for being homosexual. But as far as God was concerned they had thrones awaiting them in Heaven. All those who are poor, persecuted, and mistreated will sit on thrones and those who harmed them during their lifetime will come and fall on their knees proclaiming that God loved them. This is their reward along with an eternity of good for passing the test in the University of the World. From Breakup To Bliss - The Moth and the Flame

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Randy Hurlburt The Struggle for Closeness and Safety Laurie and Mel (not their real names) recently passed the 3 year milestone in their relationship. They love each other, but being two different people it is sometimes a struggle to understand and relate to each other. Because their struggle is similar to many others, I want to share it with you. Throughout the course of Laurie and Mels relationship they have had the same tug-of-war. It is a recurring theme. Each year their relationship gets better, but they have their setbacks and their battles as well. What Mel wants most is emotional closeness: talking, cuddling, sex. Laurie has been hurt by prior relationships and mainly wants safety. She doesnt want to be hurt again, so she keeps her distance - not all the time, of course, but more than Mel would like. My friend and mentor Dr. Harold Bessell taught me about this phenomenon. He calls it the moth and the flame. The moth is attracted to the flame, but if it gets too close it will get burned, so it backs away. Closer-farther-closer-farther: it is a circling dance of love/fear. People are the same way. They want the closeness of a love relationship, but they have been burned before so they only give part of themselves. If they give too much, they expect to be hurt again (and often are). How do Mel and Laurie deal with this? He accepts her degree of distance as long as she gradually moves closer. She accepts his desire for closeness as long as he respects her current degree of distance. He is the gravity, she is the centrifugal force. Why do they bother with these differences and difficulties? The answer is simple: there is a very high level of romantic attraction. In addition, Mel is very mature emotionally, which helps him to deal with the situation (though he also experiences the moth and flame pressures). In prior articles we have discussed the fact that romantic chemistry and emotional maturity are the key ingredients in any love relationship, and that these come in degrees, and that they are usually unbalanced. In the case of Mel and Laurie, heres what we have: Mels Chemistry for Laurie: 90% Lauries Chemistry for Mel: 90% Mels Emotional Maturity: 80% Lauries Emotional Maturity: 60% Although Mels maturity at 80% helps to hold the relationship together, it is the high chemistry (90%) that causes the moth and flame phenomenon. Chemistry is both the source of magnetic attraction and the cause of fear. Neither Mel nor Laurie is immune to this two-edged sword. Mel is able to handle it better, mainly by moving very slowly. Laurie, being less mature, tends to be impulsive, and then runs for cover. While Mel and Lauries relationship is not perfect, it has the potential to be outstanding if they work at it: emotional maturity is a learned skill, so it can increase. This relationship also has the potential to fail if they ever give up the struggle. Many people do give up just at the point of success, and thats a shame. Is it worth the struggle? Some would say No, Mel should find someone with less fear. But Mel knows that 60% is normal adult maturity and finding the same level of romantic chemistry that he feels with Laurie, plus higher emotional maturity, is not easy to do. Therefore he continues to enjoy what they have, works to make it better, and sees his glass as 60% full, not 40% empty. Meanwhile the moth continues circling the flame, ever closer, inch by scary inch, until hopefully one day they will go up in smoke together. It is the gradual letting down of barriers, letting another person inside ones walls, that ultimately leads to fulfillment in a high chemistry love relationship. It is not easy, but it is worth it. Create an Instant Change in the Atmosphere of Your Home

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Peter Mason Have you ever visited a friends home, and the house was so comfortable that you enjoyed it as much as you did the friends? At first you couldnt figure out just what it was that made the place so cozy maybe the furniture, the environment overall, hmmm what was it? Well theres a good chance that it was the shades. Never thought of that right? Shades are capable of drastically changing the feel of a room and in fact the entire home. They can even change the way you feel when youre in the home. Now before you reach back into your memory and in disgust think of those old vinyl things that your grandmother had, well snap out of it. Theyve come a long way my friend from the hard, flat vinyl rectangles or thin paper that you used to enjoy pulling as a kid, to watch as they would snap up around a little wooden tube. There are now a broad range of modern window dressings that lift and lower by a spring mechanism or by a system of drawstrings and cords. As well, these days youve got a variety of styles and fabrics to choose from. To choose the right shades when youre doing your interior decorating, you first need to know your purpose with them. Do you simply just want to control the light that comes in and out of your home? Certainly, a prime reason of a shade is to block the light. Whether you want to block the light from the outside coming in, or light from inside going out, shades work brilliantly. Privacy is a major reason why people use shades, as well as curtains and certain blinds, such as vertical blinds. Many people like to open their shades throughout the day for daylight, and close them tightly for privacy at night. Not only are they great for the aspect of visual privacy, but also believe it or not theyre great for blocking noise from outside. Some shade materials can provide insulation for your home. A problem with single pane windows and older windows is that with cracks around the sill or frame they allow outside air in. A number of materials will block this air and help keep the room temperature exactly where you want it. Probably the main reason that people make their choice of shade is for interior design and decoration purposes. This creates and maintains a particular atmosphere of the room. Choosing certain colors, distinct fabrics and style all have great decorative effect in creating the mood of the room. As you use the shades in combination with other types of window treatments such as curtains, vertical blinds, and drapes - youll get to understand just how much fun you can have while decorating your windows. George Davidsberg usually produces publications on subjects corresponding to vertical blinds and interior decorating. His articles on interior decorating and shades can be found on his web publications .
